PORTFOLIO CRITIQUE and SHOWCASE INFORMATION
One-on-one consultations last 15 minutes with Simon & Shuster Art Director Laurent Linn. We cannot reschedule a missed appointment. To ensure a successful consultation, see HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR CRITIQUE TIME on the right sidebar. Portfolio consultations are for conference registrants only and are on a first come/first served basis. Do NOT send your portfolio in advance; bring it to the conference. There are a limited number of critiques available, so register early.
CRITIQUE/CONSULTATION REGISTRATION: ($45)
Register for a portfolio critique by February 28, 2019. Cost is $45. We will let you know the time of your consultation when you pick up your registration packet on the day of the conference, Saturday, March 23, 2019. Registrations for critiques will be accepted until the available times are filled.
Registration in the Showcase is FREE but should be confirmed when registering. Please email your intention to participate in the showcase at email@example.com. Deadline to register is March 10, 2019. If you are choosing to participate in the portfolio showcase and are registering for a critique, then you will drop your portfolio off during morning registration, pick it up from the showcase and take it to the critique room. Once the review has been completed, return the portfolio to the showcase table. The Portfolio Showcase will be displayed March 23 from 8:30 am – 5 pm. Drop-off will be at 8 am. Pick-up will be during the book signing at end of the day and must be picked up promptly.
The winner will be announced at the end of the conference day and will receive free tuition to JambaLAya Kidlit Conference 2020. The winner will also design the conference logo, which will include a link to the winner’s website.
Remember NO ORIGINAL ARTWORK should be included in your portfolio. Have high-quality color copies of your art in your portfolio instead. Please label all artwork as well as the portfolio case. Promotional materials such as postcards and business cards are permitted, but they must be able to fit in the allotted display space on the showcase tables.
The portfolio can be leather or vinyl with page sizes from 8” x 10” to 11” x 14”. It should be no larger than 17″ x 26″ when opened. It should contain no more than 10-20 representational pieces of your BEST artwork and any dummies that you may wish to show. If you are bringing a book dummy, remember to attach it to your portfolio. Keep in mind that your dummy may be examined by the art director or illustrator providing the critique, but it is not guaranteed. If you are preparing an illustration portfolio for the first time, check out the SCBWI Illustrators Guide section of THE BOOK.
