JambaLAya Workshop Series: Saturday, March 18 from 10am-2pm (New Orleans).
Join us for a Middle Grade Workshop with Catherine Frank, Editor at Large, Peachtree Publishing Company and Founder, Catherine Frank Editorial Services, LLC. This is a hands-on session focusing on voice, conflict, emotional arcs, raising stakes, and more.

Come with your questions. Come to examine your middle grade stakes. This is a casual day, active workshop. Includes a First Pages/First Impressions session, too.

LOCATION: at the University of New Orleans (Bicentennial Education Building, Room 305Q)


WORKSHOP COST

Workshop: $50 Members / $65 Non-members – (Max 40 attendees)

Catherine Frank Critiques (5 max): $55 – Catherine will critique up to 10 pages of Middle Grade work in progress with a written critique and 10 minute face-to-face Zoom within a month after the workshop (date to be determined). Submissions for critique are due within 3 days after the workshop so you can apply any learnings to your work (due March 21, midnight). Email to louisianamississippi-ara@scbwi.org

Conference Lunch $15 – Honey Baked Box lunches/salad. Optional (you can also bring your own brown-bag lunch and beverage).

Catherine Frank started as an editorial assistant at Viking Children’s Books, a division of what is now Penguin Random House and spent more than a decade there, rising through the ranks to become Executive Editor. In 2011 she returned to New Orleans with her family and established Catherine Frank Editorial Services (editedbycatherine.com), which enabled her to continue doing the work she loves.

As the editor of award-winning children’s fiction and nonfiction, she has both broad and deep editorial experience. Books acquired and edited by Catherine have received awards and honors including: The Boston Globe Horn Book Award, the Golden Kite Award, the Charlotte Zolotow Award, the New York Times Best Illustrated Award.

To participate in the “First Page/Look Impressions,” you must email your one page middle grade submission (up to 200 words) or illustration by Monday, March 13 at noon to ARA, louisianamississippi-ara@scbwi.org


WORKSHOP SCHOLARSHIP INFO: (1 Available)

To help address the need for more diverse representation in the children’s and YA book industry, we are offering one full scholarship for an attendee identifying as a writer or illustrator from a marginalized group to this JambaLAya Workshop. This scholarship is open to both SCBWI members and non-members living within the Louisiana/Mississippi region.

To apply, email our region at LouisianaMississippi-ra@scbwi.org with the subject line: JambaLAya Scholarship. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 3. In the body of your email, tell us about yourself. For example:

  • What’s your current job or life situation?
  • What drew you to KidLit?
  • Have you attended an SCBWI event before?
  • What do you hope to learn or do as a result of this workshop scholarship?
  • There are no right or wrong answers; we want to get to know you and your KidLit goals.
