2017 Golden Kite Honoree and 2018 Golden Kite Judge Leslie Staub Presents a Picture Book Workshop

“The Heart of the Matter: A Deep Dive into the Art and Craft of Picture Book Writing or How to Find Your Voice as a Picture Book Writer, Think Like a Screenwriter, and Write Like a Poet.”

• Prepare for concrete, hands-on work on your manuscript.
• Deeply examine what you want your manuscript to say.
• Learn practical editorial tools to create stronger picture book manuscripts.
• Look at theme as the heart of the matter.

There will be brown-bag lunch break. Please furnish your own lunch. We ask that you bring your own beverage and water bottle as we join the effort to reduce plastic waster.

Leslie Staub’s newest releases: Bedtime for Beasties; How Do You Say I Love You Dewey, Dew?; Time for Earth School, Dewey, Dew (2017 GOLDEN KITE Honor Book). Leslie also illustrated Mama’s Nightingale (Jane Addams 2016 Children’s Book Award Honor Book) and the longtime Mem Fox favorite, Whoever You Are.

In addition to the usual notebook and something to write with, the following are optional requests:

Please bring two picture books you love; one that’s a favorite from your childhood (or your children’s childhoods) and one you love that was published within the last two to five years. If you can’t bring the physical books just note the titles in your notebook.

If you have a work-in-progress and/or a list of picture book ideas, please bring them with you in printed form. This will be for your own reference only. If you don’t have either that’s totally fine. This workshop is about discovery.
